TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem al-Quds warned there could be a religious conflict in the occupied territories due to the Zionist regime’s raids on Muslim holy sites.

Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein in a statement condemned the recurrent Israeli raids on the holy sites, especially Al-Aqsa Mosque in Quds and Ibrahimi Mosque in al-Khalil (Hebron).

He said such moves would lead to escalation of tension in the region and a possible religious conflict, Arabi21.com website.

The senior cleric also slammed the Israeli regime for banning Adhan (call to prayers) and prayers at the Ibrahimi Mosque as well as its move to arrest Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, president of the Supreme Islamic Council of Palestine.

The Israeli forces arrested Sheikh Sabri after storming his house in occupied Jerusalem al-Quds on Friday.

The occupation forces have stormed Sheikh Sabri’s house several times and removed him from Al-Aqsa under the pretext of inciting citizens to pray in the mosque.

Sheikh Sabri has rejected any Israeli measures to restrict prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque and called on: “Our fellow Palestinians to prepare themselves to defend Al-Aqsa from any threats in the coming days.”
